facts about alaska, Alaska kids activities, Alaska kids guide, Alaska kids books and crafts print out In 1927, there was a flag contest in Alaska. 13-year-old Alaska native Benny Benson from Seward, designed the eight stars of gold flag. His design won the flag contest from the 142 entries. for the territory of Alaska and a symbol for self-government state.

Teachers can ask students look at the flag, talk about what does this flag show them. Identify symbols, count how many stars are on the flag, how they think of flag as SYMBOLS OF PLACE.

And then teachers can show students how the flag author, Benny Benson explained what his design meant to him: "The blue field is for the Alaska sky and the forget-menot,an Alaskan flower. The North Star is for the future state of Alaska, the most northerly in the Union. The Dipper is for the Great Bear- symbolizing strength."

The Alaskan environment has many strong symbols. Ask students about other symbols for Alaska, like the bear, glacier, etc. Students can design and draw their own flags for the Alaska state. Ask students about meaning of their design.
